Writing up winners

Lovely letters picked as Rainbows Penpals Club comp winners

Receiving handwritten letters is always a joy and they all need to be read carefully so it’s taken Rainbows Penpals Club a wee while to get through the many that arrived for the recent competition.

Thankfully club founder Marjorie Edwards and her helpers were up to the lengthy task and they have just revealed the winners of the letter-writing competition from National Stationery Week back in May.

“The dust has long settled since NSW,” Marjorie told PG Buzz, “but it took a while to judge all the entries because there were so many, and all of them were very good, interesting and descriptive so it was a very hard choice to make.”

With the help of four judges from a local writer’s group in Ilminster, the winners whose letters will be featured in the Rainbows magazine were:

Category A – a letter describing a wonderful day out: Winner Kelly Goss from Wednesbury; runner up Lynn Latham from Ross On Wye.

Category B – a letter catching up with an old friend after a long time: Winner Eileen Torkington from Porthcawl; runner up Philomena Daly from County Tyrone.

Category C – dream destination for a long-awaited holiday: Winner Fern Adams from South Uist; runner up Petra Harrison from Poole.

Marjorie added: “Due to the generosity of the stationery and card companies – including Molly Mae, Melbury Studios, Snopake, Basildon Bond and Lamy Pens – we were able to give the three winners and three runners up a super bundle of stationery each and,as the standard was so high, we decided to award a small token prize of a pen and notebook to every entrant.”

Now Rainbows, one of the UK’s last proper pen and paper penpal organisations, is already gearing up for the 2025 NSW, which is owned by Max Publishing (and headed up by Stationery Supplies’ Sarah Laker) as well as London Stationery Show, and Marjorie said: “It was a very exciting time for us and we do hope that you might all like to take part with us again!”
