The Retas’ invitations would please David Attenborough

With ‘Into the Blue’ as the Oceanic theme for this year’s Retas greeting card retailer awards, the design and production team behind the official invitation have gone for top eco-credentials, that Sir David Attenborough would approve!

The Paper Rose design team took up the challenge to design the keepsake ticket, paper company GF Smith has donated the board and printing company Loxleys has produced it.

Kate Vine’s next open water swimming challenge will be to swim the full 70km of Lake Geneva in a relay format with five others. They will be doing it all butterfly stroke, which will be a world first if Kate and the others are successful.

As a competitive open water swimmer herself, both the ‘Into the Blue’ theme for this year’s Retas as well as the aim to produce the invitation that was environmentally friendly chimed strongly with Kate Vines, creative controller of Paper Rose. As she told PG Buzz, “As a passionate open water swimmer, the future of our oceans, and our planet is something really close to my heart.”

The Paper Rose design team came up with the idea of a magical mermaid scene for the sleeve of the ticket with a handy pull out eco-guide inside.

Kate revealed that it has been “a great process learning about the options available that offer a more environmentally friendly alternative when printing paper products. Loxleys has been able to print an invitation that not only looks fabulous, but is less damaging to our planet by using Extract board supplied by GF Smith (containing post-consumer coffee cup fibre) and first generation biodegradable eco-glitter supplied by Powder Arts.”

As she added: “As an industry it’s vital that changes are made, however small and we all need to remember that every tiny change we can make can and will make a difference.”

Loxleys has undertaken to produce the tickets digitally, using mineral based toner inks, which are fully recyclable and manufactured to the environmental standard EN ISO 9001:2008.

This further reinforces its commitment to maintaining high environmental credentials. The Sheffield-based specialist greeting card printer has recently finalised its ‘green room’ aka Lizard Lounge at its HQ in which it showcases examples of using bio-degradable flitter, corn starch bags, Super Enviro bio-degradable bags, GemBoss (an alternative to plastic gems), its Corporate Social Responsibility report and various other environmental products and services.

The finalists of The Retas 2018 awards were announced on May 1 2018 on PG Buzz with a publication featuring the finalists in all their glory distributed with the June edition of Progressive Greetings (which is out now).

The winners will be revealed at a lavish afternoon event held at The Dorchester Hotel on Wednesday 11 July.

For tickets to the event, which will be attended by over 400 retailers, publishers and trade suppliers contact Clare Davies of Createvents on clare@createvents.co.uk or 01183 340085.
