The Henries 2023: Shortlisted ranges revealed

Physical samples needed by 25 July for live judging round

The waiting is over – the greeting card and giftwrappings ranges that have made it into the official shortlist for The Henries 2023 greeting card awards have been announced, and it’s now time for shortlisters to get their physical samples in for the second live round of judging.

Above & top: Judging is a serious business for In Heaven At Home’s Anne Barber and Henry the dachshund in Market Harborough. Anne said: “We loved all the colour and diversity, I thoroughly enjoyed doing it – and Henry took his responsibility very seriously!”

A panel comprising 65 retail buyers from specialist multiples, supermarkets, garden centres, small groups and leading indies had their work cut out, scrutinising the thousands of entries that were submitted for the online judging from 287 different greeting card publishers, to arrive at the shortlist, which was revealed on Monday, 17 July.

For the second year in succession, there is a two-stage judging process for The Henries – the first now-completed round took place entirely online to pick the shortlist, with 15 ranges in the vast majority of product categories.

Showing the breadth of the judges for the online round, among them were buyers from Tesco, Clintons, Scribbler, John Lewis & Partners, Card Factory, Morley Group, Postmark, Waitrose & Partners, House of Cards, Longacres, Lark, Fortnum & Mason, Garsons, Henry & Co, and Elphicks as well as a host of independent retailers.

Their votes helped pick the shortlisted ranges which now go on to feature at the physical judging event which takes place in a couple of weeks’ time where a judging panel, again comprising entirely of retail buyers, will consider the actual greeting cards and giftwrappings and their decisions will lead to the finalists and winners being chosen for The Henries 2023.

Publishers with collections featuring in the shortlist are now asked to send six different card designs along with a sample envelope for each of their shortlisted ranges to Jakki Brown, The Henries, Max Publishing, United House, North Road, London N7 9DP to arrive by Tuesday, 25 July.

Above: “Mum and I judged the Henries at our Windermere lodge,” Celebrations of Carlisle's Sonya Haandrikman-Sibbald said. “It was lovely to judge the Henries away from the buzz and business of the shop so we could give it 100% focus. Dylan and the dogs wanted to help too!”

“Publishers’ engagement with The Henries hit new heights this year,” commented Jakki, managing director of Max Publishing which owns and organises The Henries. “There were submissions from almost 300 different companies, from one-man bands through to the established leading brands, collectively showcasing our industry’s incredible creative prowess.

“With such a strong and varied shortlist, from 110 different publishers, it’s now all systems go for the physical judging day to arrive at the finalists.”
