Scribbler To Move To Biodegradable Bags On Its Branded Cards From 2019

‘You might think of us as the green coloured card shop but now we’ve decided it’s time to go even greener!’ is the consumer-facing message Scribbler has just sent out into the world today (December 21).

Issuing its pledge to be more environmentally-friendly in 2019, the retailer has just gone live with how it plans to up its game on the eco front.

‘We love our ol’ big blue and green planet and think it’s time we all started taking better care of it,’ is the over arching statement on Scribbler’s new environmental push.

Written and presented in a quirky conversational manner which chimes with the Scribbler brand, the ‘Goes Green…er’ statement, details what the retailer is already doing on the environmental front, before revealing its plans for 2019.

On the former, it details that the chain uses only FSC-certified boards on its own brand cards, that the standard printing ink it uses are vegetable-based, how all its own brand cards, notebooks and postcards are printed in the UK.

As part of its ‘rethinking’ of its use of plastic within its warehouse, in 2019 it is making the move to ditch plastic bags used to get the cards from the printers to Scribbler, switching to a single paper band. ‘We predict that for every 1,000,000 cards we print that we’ll save 166,666 plastic bags – that’s over 333kg of unwanted plastic not going to landfill!’ says the statement.

Extending this commitment into store, starting with its own brand Valentine’s Day cards, Scribbler is switching to packaging all newly printed standard size Scribbler brand cards in biodegradable film bags.

‘The new bags are made from PLA (polylactic acid) plastic, which is derived from renewable sources such as corn, potato or beet starch. By moving away from traditional petroleum-based plastics we’re helping to preserve our planet’s natural resources,’ claims Scribbler.

The statement details how these bags can be disposed of:

‘Compositing your bag is easy peasy lemon squeezy, just drop it into your kitchen, food or garden waste bin where it will either:

.   Reach an industrial grade composting plant or landfill, where within 6 months it’ll have composted into CO2, water and biomass

.   Head to an incinerator and burn up into water and CO2.’

The retailer is going to convey this packaging change by including a Going Green logo on the backs of the cards.

Giving extra assurances to its online customers, as well as ditching cellowrapping on online orders for its own brand cards that the printer it uses for these is a member of the Carbon Capture Programme, meaning that for every sheet of paper used in the production of all online orders the scheme replants a set number of trees.

“We know nobody is perfect, and we’re not claiming to be the next Captain Planet,” proclaims Scribbler  co-founders John and Jennie Procter. “But we have a responsibility to protect our green and blue home, which is why we’re proud of our commitment to going greener and reducing our carbon footprint in 2019”.
