Talented performer, Pippa Evans is well known for her ability as a comedic improviser with a strong singing voice. Well, she nailed at The Retas greeting card retailer awards last week (July 10) when, as host for the event, she wrote a bespoke song all about greeting cards that she delivered with great aplomb, the lyrics of which chimed with the audience.
The ditty, entitled ‘A Card For Everything’ not only highlighted the role cards play in the large and small events in our lives, but also how the ‘greeting card economy’ is underpinned by the stash of ‘just in case’ cards that fill drawers and boxes in people’s homes.
And, going down especially well with the assembled Retas retail finalists was the harmonious finale ‘When you don’t know what to say…run to a card shop and pay for the item that will get you out of anything…there’s a card for everything.’

A Card For Everything
In Britain we aren’t very good at speaking our feelings out loud
We shrink at the thought of telling people we’re proud – of them
When it comes to ‘I love you’ or ‘You mean a lot to me’
These words might not come easily…
Luckily there is a card for everything
Whatever you need you’ll find a card for everything
Cards to celebrate your wife
Cards to mourn the loss of life
Cards that stick in the knife
There’s a card for everything!
Cards that congratulate a wedding of course
Cards that celebrate the 7th divorce
Cards with jokes about sexual intercourse
There’s a card for everything!
Cards that tell people you know they love prosecco!
Cards that tell people they drink a lot of prosecco
Cards that tell people they might have a problem with prosecco
And in my house, I don’t know about you –
I have a drawer in my desk that has a card or two
A ‘just in case’ pile of 6 or 7 thousand,
In case I forget a birthday.
I didn’t forget – I misremembered.
E cards came
Then off they sloped
It is not a card if it’s not in an envelope
No one in this climate wants to click on a link
That makes you think your hard drive might be gone in a blink!
So thanks for all the card shops on every street
That we can pop into and pick up a paper treat
And thanks to all the writers and designers who make
A card for every win and for every mistake
When all is said and done
Words don’t mean much, and yet they do
When they’re printed on recycled, or written out in glitter glue
It’s an industry of £1.7 billion a year
When you don’t know what to say
Run to a card shop and pay for the item that will get you out of anything
Cos…there’s a card for everything!
The Retas Photo Gallery Is Now Live
Life moves at such a pace that all too often lovely happenings are overwritten with more pressing matters and worries as we deal with matters in hand.
Photographs do a great job in transporting us back to the moments when memories were made. The Retas 2019 was a splendiferous afternoon – so enjoy reliving the vibrant gathering by immersing yourself in the photo gallery which covers from the champagne reception, through the award ceremony right through to everyone leaving for the Market Tavern after party.
