Moonpigs go tinsel-tastic

Online retailer’s iconic porker trots out seasonal twist on brand’s story

Look out for the Moonpigs – the cuties are about to trot on to your screens as they sizzle back for the special piggies’ take on a Christmas ad.

Blowing the big bucks festive adverts out of the water with its concentration on greeting cards and personalising them to make the love shine through, Moonpig has put a seasonal twist on its story.

As PG Buzz revealed on Friday, 15 November, of the 16 major retailers with festive adverts, only John Lewis, Tesco, Waitrose, and Morrisons even had a whisper of traditional Christmas cards while Sports Direct was the one which homed in on the humble festive missive.

While Moonpig is known as a big online greetings retailer, its offer includes stationery, flowers, gifts, and photos, but it has gone back to its roots with the mini-movies from advertising agency Modern Citizens.

The little Moonpig can be seen complete with antlers and tinsel from Monday, 25 November, across TV, video on demand, radio and YouTube strutting down a snow-covered street showcasing the latest personalisation features.

From stickers to handwriting, photos and experience gifts, each feature appears on and around the adorable Moonpig before it dramatically squeezes through a letterbox and turns into a card delivered straight to your door.

Chief marketing officer Kristof Fahy explained: “We know when it comes to personalisation Moonpig is unbeatable with the breadth of features that can be added to your card, and this is what we wanted to demonstrate with our new adverts, that we truly have the UK’s most personalised card.

“Since the Moonpigs launched we’ve had such a great reception to their little characters, so we’re delighted to bring them back, with a large dose of confidence and swagger to reflect how the strength of our offering has grown too.”

The wee piggies were the brand’s mascot from the start in 2000 before being retired in 2017, but their popularity saw them return in 2021 alongside Modern Citizens as the company’s advertising agency.

“If you told me I could just make Moonpig ads for the rest of my career I’d bite your trotters off!” laughed Stu Outhwaite, chief creative officer at Modern Citizens. “It’s such a joy to send more of these porky blighters strutting and moonwalking out into the world – fly my piggies, fly.”

Designed to demonstrate there’s a Moonpig for every moment, a total of six new adverts will showcase a different Moonpig to match the occasion throughout the year. Whether it’s wearing a giant heart sticker for Valentine’s Day, or holding a bunch of flowers for Mother’s Day, each character aims to inspire the nation to make their most personalised card yet using any of the many features.
