The Just a Card campaign, the brainchild of designer Sarah Hamilton to encourage the public to support independent retailers is bolstering its activities in the run up to the all important Christmas trading period.
Elaborating Sarah told PG Buzz: “During the week of Monday 19th to Friday 23rd November there’ll be much fun – culminating in our very own alternative to Black Friday – Indie Friday.”
She urges everyone to join the campaign “to share their love and support for independent shops, artists and makers – and to remind people why every sale, even ‘just a card’ is vital and valued by every small business.”
As Sarah quite rightly points out, so many independents find Black Friday a challenge to compete with larger brands. “So now’s our time to shine, to put the colour back into Black Friday and demonstrate the wonders and benefits of supporting independents.“
In recognition of growing significance of the Just a Card campaign, which is run on a volunteer basis, funded entirely by donations, the GCA has pledged its support by helping towards establishing Just a Card Indie Week as well as the general campaign work.
Social media has been integral to growing awareness of the Just a Card campaign, as evidenced by the activity on Instagram.
As well as having a presence on the Cardgains Village at Autumn Fair this week, there will be a dedicated Just a Card stand at Top Drawer (September 9-11).
Sarah Hamilton will be hosting a panel discussion about greeting card publishing at Top Drawer’s RetailFest on Sunday 9 September (4.15pm-5pm). Involving the winners of the PaperAwards, the discussion will cover ‘From part time hustle to full time loving life – learn how to make money from your passion in design.’
Sarah will also be selling signed copies of her House of Cards book (which champions greeting card artistry), the profits of which will go to the campaign.
