Greetings to Black History Month

GCA instigates social media campaign to spotlight Black publishers

October is Black History Month and the GCA is helping to mark this by shining a spotlight on Black publishers, and is keen to hear from those wanting to participate by Monday, 7 October.

The association is looking for 30-second reels highlighting each publisher’s greeting cards which will then be featured on the GCA’s social media platforms – and first up will be Amanda Kinghorn, founder of All Shades Cards.

“We’re thrilled to be able to feature the creativity and talent of our Black publisher members through short reels,” GCA memberships and marketing manager Adriana Lovesy said. “We want reels that highlight your greeting cards in an engaging and visually appealing manner, and it should showcase the design, quality, and uniqueness of your work.

The activity being driven by Adriana and GCA council member Georgina Fihosy, who runs AfroTouch Design. Georgina has written a blog, hosted on the GCA website explaining why Black History Month matters, and how publishers and retailers can get involved. The blog can be found here with links also given to the event’s main site – www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk.

“As a Black GCA council member, I’m dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in the greeting card industry,” Georgina explained. “It’s important to me that our industry reflects the diversity of our communities and that everyone feels recognised and celebrated.

“This year’s Black History Month’s theme of Reclaiming Our Narratives provides an opportunity for publishers and retailers to genuinely engage with Black culture, amplify under-represented voices, and expand representation within their offerings.”

And she urged publishers and retailers to get involved by collaborating with Black artists, designers and businesses, curate themed collections, and host talks, workshops and campaigns to educate people about Black culture and history while celebrating its contributions, as well as committing to diversity and inclusivity all year round.

To get involved with the GCA initiative, reels need to be submitted via WhatsApp, including the company name in the message along with any additional information to be shared about the work – contact adriana@gca.cards for more information.
