Industry association involved as Government runs consultation over rebalancing tax for retail sectors
A mooted online sales tax has prompted the GCA to ask those in the greeting card community for their views on the Government’s exploration into ways of rebalancing the differences in how taxes affect the online and bricks-and-mortar retail sectors.
According to the Government, such a tax would be applied as a means to “rebalance the taxation of the retail sector between online and in-store retail”, and it comes in the wake of the recent business rates review.
The Government is currently running a policy consultation to explore the potential impacts of an online sales tax (OST) and assess the cases for and against implementing it – for more information visit Gov.uk Online Sales Tax Consultation.
GCA ceo Amanda Fergusson explained that there are questions over many areas, including the different forms an OST could take and how to define an online sale reflecting the range of transaction, delivery, and collection options. There has also been discussion that an OST could be applied only to businesses with an online turnover above a certain level.
The GCA are keen for information from members on the matter so the voice of the greetings industry can be heard, and is working with the Independent Retailers’ Confederation (IRC) to feed back to the Government. GCA members are asked to take around 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire by 30 April, 2022. All names and business details will be kept confidential. If you have any questions, please email hello@gca.cards or call 020 7619 9266.
