Fast-food giant upcycles sustainability ads showing how coffee cups turn into greeting cards
Hallmark greeting cards are starring in McDonald’s ads again as the fast-food giant is upcycling its campaign showing the company’s commitment to sustainability.
The Change A Little, Change A Lot ad, shown on Twitter over the past few days, focuses on the numerous small changes McDonald’s has made for positive impact on the planet, people and farming.
And it puts greeting cards front and centre showing how the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder restaurant’s McCafé disposable cups are recycled into board that’s used by publishers, including Hallmark, for their respective eco-friendly ranges.
Originally shown a year ago, this is the first advert of three, highlighting waste reduction with used cooking oil turned into biodiesel for McDonald’s own trucks, and Happy Meal toys become kids’ playground items, while a design from Hallmark’s CupCycled range features in a sleight-of-hand camera shot where the cup becomes the card with a Bean Thinking About You caption.
This card range, which debuted at PG Live in 2019, is printed on board made by James Cropper in the Lake District out of recycled disposable coffee cups and a mix of FSC-certified materials.
It’s estimated that 2.5 billion takeaway cups are discarded each year so Cropper’s CupCycling process is dedicated to upcycling as many as possible and turning them into beautiful papers and boards.
