Brainbox Candy buffoon’s a shear genius as hair-raising efforts hit £3,600 total
Seventeen inches has proved to really matter to both Brainbox Candy hair-o Ben Hickman and the Little Princess Trust.
For that’s the length of locks the publisher’s co-founder and self-confessed buffoon had chopped off and donated to the charity that makes wigs for youngsters who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or conditions such as alopecia.
And, as well as providing the hair, Ben was a cut above the rest with his fundraising efforts which grew well beyond the hoped-for £700 to pay for the manufacture and distribution of the wig – thanks to the generosity of his greeting card industry pals, the total has hit an incredible £3,626.25 including Gift Aid.
“It’s double amazeballs!” Ben said after debuting his shear genius new lockless look at PG Live last week. “I donated 17ins of hair and the charity were delighted adding that, along with the hair donation, I was in their top 5% fundraisers.
“I couldn’t be happier, this amazing industry that we’re lucky to work in really got behind it and I’m humbled and extremely grateful.”
Not being able to get a trim during lockdown saw Ben start to grow his luscious blond locks and he then got the idea to use it to help the Little Princess Trust from a driver at the van hire company Brainbox Candy uses, who grows his hair every couple of years, then donates it to the trust when he finally has a haircut.
The charity provides around 2,000 real-hair wigs free each year but needs extra cash to cover the £700 cost of making each one, and it is also one of the UK’s largest funders of research into childhood cancers and kinder treatments.
