Cubs step out to keep 40-year-old free Christmas card delivery tradition alive

Postage costs are no obstacle to sending Christmas cards in Harpenden as the annual Cub Scouts’ free delivery system was put into action – for the 40th year running!

And helping mark this very special delivery were card publisher Heather Trefusis and her son Leo who joined the youngsters, parents and volunteers lending a hand to sort and deliver the thousands of  festive messages.

“It was an amazing thing to be a part of,” said the founder of Heather Trefusis Art, “I was so pleased to be able to help out. There was a fantastic atmosphere among the volunteers throughout the weekend.

“We all know how meaningful it is to receive cards at Christmas and it’s incredible that the Cubs have now been running this amazing community service for 40 years!”

Over the weekend, the team made sure exactly 3,993 Christmas cards got to their destinations in and around the Hertfordshire town.

The service is well known in the local area, Heather explained, and is greatly appreciated by those who use it each year to send and receive local deliveries, with the volunteers collecting the cards from local care homes, churches and individuals in the run up to the weekend.

They then spent Saturday sorting them into piles by location, and went out on Sunday, 17 December, hand-delivering all the cards around the town before getting together at the end of their rounds for a well-deserved reward of mince pies and hot drinks.
