The Sun’s charity card packs now on sale to buy gifts for youngsters in hospital
Charity cards with difference are now available thanks to UK Greetings partnering with The Sun On Sunday’s Christmas Cards For Kids campaign for the second year running.
The greeting card publisher has teamed up with the national newspaper to print the designs chosen as winners in a nationwide competition, with proceeds from sales going towards buying gifts for young cancer patients staying in hospital.
Hundreds of youngsters got arty and sent in their pictures, with one winner picked in each of the three age groups, under-fives, six to 11, and 11 to 16 – and the packs of 12 cards, with four of each design, are for sale at £6 through The Entertainer’s website and in its 170+ stores, with the charity Children With Cancer UK organising the gifts.
The Sun On Sunday has announced the winners a few days ago and UKG has already been busy getting the three winning designs ready for print, and the limited edition packs are already available.
UKG’s communications manager Gabriella Peace said the publisher would love people to “support this fantastic cause and help Children With Cancer deliver presents and arrange a visit from Santa to children who face being in hospital on Christmas Day”.
She added: “From all of us involved in this campaign, we wanted to say a big thank Yule to everyone that shows their support through purchasing the cards.”
The youngest winner is five-year-old Veronica Hon from south London, who painted a picture of Father Christmas to cheer up other children.
“Christmas should be the best day ever for everyone – especially those who are sick,” little Veronica told The Sun On Sunday. “Last year, I got very ill and I had to go to hospital. I made lots of friends, but some days I felt sad. I was so happy to come home.
“I wanted to do something to help other children. I love to paint and I love doing art at school. I hope that people who see my picture will have big smiles on their faces, just like the one on my card.”
A winter scene with a snowman was Kevin Kovacs’ winning design, which caught the eye of all the judges, including former CBBC presenter Angellica Bell.
The Somerset seven-year-old said: “I hope my drawing helps buy lots of nice presents for the sick children, that they will be able to see Santa and that they will have a wonderful Christmas.”
And 13-year-old Eloise Norman came up with a lovely snowman to win the older children’s category which she hopes will help “play a small part in raising some money to make the season as special as it can be”.
Children With Cancer UK ceo Jo Elvin explained: “The funds raised from the sales will go directly towards buying toys for young cancer patients in hospital this December so I would urge everyone to buy some. You are helping to create a special Christmas memory for extraordinary children.”
