Eco-friendly Card Co owners expand bin-twinning and promote Zero Waste recycling scheme
Sue Morrish has bin making sure she and her family live up to their Eco-friendly Card Company name and marking Earth Day 2023 by twinning their bin.
The fridge at the family home in Devon has been twinned through the Toilet Twinning charity, helping provide food for refugees in the Democratic Republic Of Congo, and now Sue has joined the bin-twinning campaign to tackle plastic pollution while helping impoverished communities in the same country.
“We’ve chosen to twin our hot-composter bin which we use to compost food and garden waste, as well as compostable bags that are used on some of our products,” Sue told PG Buzz.
The project supports a scheme where workers collect, process and recycle plastic pollution from the local community which is then turned into bricks, providing better housing material while lessening the rubbish accumulating in the streets which exacerbates flooding and spreads diseases, and meaning residents don’t have to burn their waste.
Run by Sue and photographer husband Scott, The Eco-friendly Card Company was the first UK greeting card publisher to adopt compostable bags back in 2008, and she explained how she and son Benjamin were pictured for a publicity shot.
She said: “It was taken in my wonderful dad’s vegetable garden – which not only is packed full of amazing plants but also a great place for spotting and photographing insects, birds and lots of other fantastic wildlife that have appeared on our cards over the years.”
And just a couple a weeks ago the garden featured on episode six of the latest series of BBC Gardeners’ World, which can be watched here, with presenter Toby Buckland meeting Sue’s dad Cliff Curd who “through forensic planning and bold vision is growing an extraordinary array of edibles”, with enough produce from his his one-acre plot to feed his family all year round – from pineapples, avocado and figs to radishes, almonds and 16 varieties of apples.
Sue is also keen to help TerraCycle with its Zero Waste bins which accept any type of biodegradable or compostable plastic goods including PLA corn-starch bags which is then sent for industrial composting.
“We now have one of these collection boxes in our office,” Sue added, “which means customers can return any Eco-friendly Card Co compostable packaging to us for composting.”
As well as offering cards and envelopes held together by a card clasp label, The Eco-friendly Card Co also offers calendars and Christmas packs in compostable corn-starch bags certified with the Seedling logo showing they meet EU composting standard EN13432.
