Austins’ royal reception

Department store owner David chats retail with King Charles

Family department store owner David Austin, of Austins in Newton Abbot, had the chance to discuss retail and greeting card sales with His Majesty The King when he attended a recent reception.

The third generation of his family to run the four Austins department stores in the south Devon town, David was among those nominated by the British Independent Retailers’ Association (Bira) to visit Buckingham Palace for the event organised to recognise the part that small businesses play in the economy nationwide.

“We were in a group of only four retailers,” David said, “and were able to talk to the King who was extraordinarily personable, interested and engaging. It was such a privilege. Everyone at Austins has been excited and thrilled that this recognition and honour was extended to us.”

From humble beginnings 98 years ago, the Austins stores now dominate the market town’s landmark clock tower square, making the retailer the largest independent, family-owned department store in the south-west with 100 staff, and a greeting card section which includes publishers such as Wrendale Designs, Wendy Jones-Blackett, and Pigment.

The reception was held in the State Dining Room, and David told the Teignmouth Post & Gazette: “I was able to explain how, as a store, we are like a small John Lewis in a small town but with an important role to play and we regard ourselves as a key part of the community.

“The King seemed very interested and he talked about the importance of small businesses which have great ideas.”
