Morrisons wraps up plastic-free Christmas

Festive gift wrap and accessory ranges boost eco offer, with added price cuts

Morrisons is gunning for a plastic-free Christmas by removing all plastic packaging from its festive gift wrap and accessory ranges to match its naked card offer.

Having already removed all plastic bags for life from every store, the new range forms part of the supermarket giant’s plans to reduce plastic packaging by 50% and to make all own-brand plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

Cutting out the plastic film and shrink wrap means the company is using over 3.1 tonnes less, while the removal of glitter and plastic from cards, paper wrap and crackers has already reduced plastic in its range by more than 150 tonnes over the past three years.

Morrisons’ gift bags are now plastic-free, made with paper twists or braids as handles, and the supermarket is also launching a fully-recyclable sticky tape meaning there’s no need to remove it from wrapping paper before placing it in kerbside recycling bins.

And, as well as offering customers the chance of a more sustainable Christmas, Morrisons has acted on the cost-of-living front too by halving the price of wrapping paper from £2 in 2021 to just 99p, with the price of its gift bags also reduced.

Jodie Mackrill, buying manager for Christmas and events at Morrisons, said: “We’re always looking to find ways to reduce and remove plastic packaging across all the products we sell. It’s what our customers tell us they want too.

“During the Christmas period, 269,423 miles of wrapping paper are used every year, contributing to plastic ending up in landfill. Our new entirely plastic-free Christmas wrap and gift range means customers can have a more sustainable Christmas and we hope that cutting costs on gift bags and wrapping paper will help them in that.”
