Festive freebie for John Lewis staff

10,000 temp jobs on offer as retailer gives workers free food and reveals For All Life’s Moments brand promise

John Lewis Partnership is recruiting 10,000 seasonal staff to help with increased demand over Christmas – and is also offering free food to all partners and temporary workers from 3 October to 6 January to help with the current cost of living crisis.

And the retail giant has also unveiled its new For All Life’s Moments brand promise, which replaces the 97-year-old Never Knowingly Undersold pledge, which is being revealed online, on its app and in-store, as well as a TV push starting on Thursday, 8 September.

Having filled 7,550 temporary roles last year, for the 2022 festive period, there will be 2,000 extra staff across the partnership’s 34 John Lewis stores, including sales and merchandising positions, plus 4,000 at the 331 Waitrose outlets, such as supermarket assistants, night-shift workers and customer delivery drivers, and another 4,000 in the supply chain, including warehouse workers and drivers to support the expected increase online orders.

With extra staff needed in the busy seasonal department in John Lewis stores, including selling Christmas cards and wrap, JLP’s chief operations officer Andrew Murphy said: “We pride ourselves on creating a happy workplace because it’s our Partners who make the difference and it’s thanks to them that John Lewis and Waitrose are two of the UK’s best-loved brands.

“We are looking forward to welcoming people across the country to grow our team and ensure we deliver a great Christmas for our customers.”

The retailer has already kickstarted the recruitment drive to keep up with demand over the busy festive season and, as well as the temporary roles, there are a number of permanent posts throughout the partnership being offered on its website too.

Along with the free meals, successful candidates will receive a competitive salary, training and potential development opportunities as well as flexible and blended working in a company which states that it “that seeks to be the most inclusive in the UK”.

Yesterday, 5 September, JLP revealed its new For All Life Moments tagline as the company adapts to a profound shift in spending habits post-pandemic, and rising living costs.

The pledge is designed to tap into what the chain is billing as “moments economy”, with its annual How We Shop, Live And Look 2022 report revealing Britons are spending smaller amounts on enjoying day-to-day life – from hosting a dinner party to celebrating a dog’s birthday – rather than splurging on set-piece events such as foreign holidays.

John Lewis executive director Pippa Wicks said: “Today marks the first step of our journey to reimagine our business around a powerful insight around the Moments Economy. Customers told us that making the most of everyday moments contributes to their happiness.

“We’re already synonymous with the big occasions, from Christmas to planning a nursery. In rising to the emerging Moments Economy, we’ll become the place that people know they can come to bring a little joy to all of life’s moments, in an affordable way.”
