Sue and Scott Morrish, of the Eco-friendly Card Co Presses Jeremy Hunt To Support Indies

Sue and Scott Morrish, co-owners of the Eco-friendly Card Co met up with Tory leadership contender Jeremy Hunt last week and made sure the would-be Prime Minister knew all about the greeting card industry as well as the importance of supporting small independent businesses and local high streets.

Sue and Scott were recently invited to the Conservative party hustings in Exeter, close to where the Devon-based publishing company is based, to meet with current foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt who is one of the leading contenders to head up the Conservative party.

The connection between the Morrishs and the Tory leadership contender was that during his time as Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt had taken an interest in issues regarding sepsis awareness raised by Sue and Scott, (whose son Sam sadly died, aged 3 from this treatable condition due to lack of awareness).

While the meeting enabled Sue and Scott to continue to press for increased awareness among the public and within the NHS, it also provided an opportunity for other issues to be discussed, including the importance of supporting small independent businesses and local high streets. “Independent retailers are the backbone of our business and vital contributors to communities,” Sue stressed to Jeremy. “We welcome any government support for small businesses, especially with regards to business rates,” she added.

At the end of the meeting Sue presented Jeremy with a ‘Good Luck’ card filled with facts about the greeting card industry as well as highlighting concerns about the current supply issues for recycled paper and boards. “It seems crazy that we can’t buy good quality recycled board that’s made in the UK, using UK post-consumer waste,” said Sue, “If we want to start taking responsibility for our own waste we should be making recycled pulp and papers in the UK – all as part of growing the green economy and reducing our Carbon Footprint.”

With the agreement of Sue and Scott, Jeremy Hunt shared some video footage of the recent meeting on his Twitter feed, during which the Minister came in for some due praise for listening and acting on the sepsis issue.

“Jeremy was the first person to act and improve patient safety. We had no voice at that point and he heard us,” said Scott on the video. “He cared and his actions supported what he told us he was going to do,” said Scott who said that what they have witnessed subsequently is that when mistakes occur that they are learnt from. “Our hope is that it will result in a safer NHS for patients and staff. As a normal member of the public that’s exactly what our politics and our leaders.”
