“His legendary mullet hairstyle is no longer, but Pat Sharp will always be an 80s icon – hence, we were delighted when he agreed to host The Henries next month as he fits the bill for the Electric Dreams 80s theme of this year’s event so perfectly,” said Warren Lomax, joint managing director of Max Publishing, which owns and organises The Henries and PG.
While the finalists of The Henries greeting card awards were announced last month (https://www.pgbuzz.net/the-henries-2018-product-finalists-announced/) the outright winners will be revealed at the industry’s ‘big night’, which will take place on Thursday 4 October at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, opposite London’s Hyde Park and attended by 700 publishers, retailers and suppliers.
The Henries awards are the serious accolades for publishers in the UK greeting card industry, but the event at which this year’s winners will be revealed looks set to be fun night, helped by the 80s theme for this year.
No stranger to the wonders of the 80s as he himself was one (who could forget that mullet hairstyle!), Pat Sharp presented his first daytime strip show for BBC Radio 1 at just 20 years of age. Following a year on air, plus numerous Top of the Pops TV appearances, he then went on to host mid mornings at 95.8 Capital FM for a decade. Along the way he picked up a gold Sony award while also notching up seven hit singles and raising over £300,000 for charity as part of the infamous Stock Aitken Waterman duo ‘Pat & Mick’.
Pat then took his mid morning slot to number 1 again, as part of seven successful years at London’s Heart, becoming the only presenter ever to rate number 1 on mid mornings in London on two different stations.
On TV Pat hosted the top, now cult-rated ITV show, FunHouse, for 11 years (now back airing re-runs on Challenge/Sky) along with other ITV shows, including the Saturday morning spectacular What’s Up Doc?, 10 Sharp, The Gala Opening of Disneyland Paris‘ plus Challenge TV’s Prizetime, Sky One’s UK Top 40 and many others, not to mention being the pioneer host of Sky Channel’s first pop video shows (Skytrax) shown across Europe via satellite and cable throughout the 80s.
Pat Sharp won the DJ special of The Weakest Link, raising £13,000 for charity. His appearance on Channel 4’s The Games earned him great respect from viewers and fellow contestants alike, as he was proclaimed ‘The People’s Hero’. He also had a role in The Kevin Bishop Show on 4 and has guested on The Justin Lee Collins Show and The One Show. He has appeared on Celebrity Come Dine With Me and Never Mind The Buzzcocks and hosts many live PA’s all over the world. Hosting The Henries on October 4 adds to his glittering career!
